Fourth Class is the sixth year in Irish primary school, typically accommodating children aged 9 to 10 years old. The school day runs from 8:45 a.m. to 2:25 p.m.

In Fourth Class, pupilss study 12 subject areas, including the three core subjects—English, Irish, and Mathematics—which are taught daily. Other subjects include Science, History, Geography, Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Physical Education, SPHE (Social, Personal and Health Education).  Where possible, teachers use a thematic approach, linking subjects together to deepen learning and engagement.

This year focuses on:

  • Building stronger literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Introducing more advanced concepts in maths, reading, and writing.
  • Developing critical thinking and independent learning.
  • Encouraging social and emotional growth.
  • Fostering organisational skills and promoting pupils responsibility for their own learning.

Fourth Class serves as an important bridge to the more senior classes in primary school, laying the foundation for success in the years ahead.
