Junior Infants is the first year of primary school and marks the beginning of the eight-year primary school cycle. Children in Junior Infants are typically between the ages of 4 and 5½ years old. The school day for Junior Infants is shorter than that of the senior classes, usually running from 8:15 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. During the year, children engage in twelve subject areas, taught through a thematic approach.
